Parmod Kalia, 1958-2026 (copyright Nick Wallis)
We were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of ex-Sub-Postmaster Parmod Kalia at the age of just 67. Wrongfully prosecuted by the Post Office in 2001, he survived a custodial prison sentence and only years later found the strength to share his story, encouraging others to come forward and to seek justice.
Each of our trustees had the honour of personally meeting and getting to know Parmod over the years, whether at court proceedings including the overturning of his conviction at Southwark Crown Court in 2021, at numerous Post Office Inquiry hearings or at events hosted by Bath Publishing at which Parmod contributed to discussions and spoke movingly of his ordeal and fight for compensation. We knew him as a quiet, thoughtful gentleman who, despite a natural humility, could command an audience with his message of strength and determination. One of our trustees joined him as a spokesperson for the cause on many news programmes and two of us also had the privilege of singing with him as fellow members of the choir ‘Hear Our Voice’ representing Post Office Scandal Survivors on national television. This was Parmod’s way of reaching out to fellow survivors in a way which was full of hope, warmth and friendship. We believe his life story shouldn’t be defined by the ordeal which he survived, but rather by this selfless generosity of spirit which he consistently shared with all those around him. There’s no more appropriate tribute to Parmod, no better way of remembering his fortitude and dignity than by taking a moment to hear his story in his own voice and words. So below is a link to his appearance at the Post Office Inquiry and to his witness statement giving an account of his life in the aftermath of the scandal. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends. Comments are closed.
